Total 100 marks: written exam 80, internal assessment 20.

  1. Chemical reactions and equations — writing and balancing equations; combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement; oxidation and reduction; corrosion and rancidity.
  2. Acids, bases and salts — chemical properties; acids and bases in water; pH in everyday life; salts from common salt (including washing soda, bleaching powder, baking soda, Plaster of Paris).
  3. Metals and non-metals — physical and chemical properties; reactivity series; ionic compounds; extraction and refining; corrosion and prevention.
  4. Carbon and its compounds — covalent bonding; saturated and unsaturated compounds; homologous series; nomenclature; combustion, oxidation, addition and substitution; ethanol (C2H5OH) and ethanoic acid; soaps and detergents.
  5. Life processes — nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion in humans and plants.
  6. Control and coordination — nervous system, reflex action, human brain; coordination in plants; hormones in animals.
  7. How organisms reproduce — asexual and sexual reproduction; reproductive health.
  8. Heredity — variation; Mendel’s contribution; sex determination.
  9. Light — reflection and refraction — spherical mirrors and lenses; formulas and magnification.
  10. The human eye and the colourful world — accommodation; defects of vision; dispersion and scattering.
  11. Electricity — current, Ohm’s law, resistance, series/parallel, heating effect, electric power.
  12. Magnetic effects of electric current — magnetic field; right-hand thumb rule; Fleming’s left-hand rule; domestic circuits.
  13. Our environment — ecosystem, food chains, ozone depletion, waste management.
