Exam scheme
One theory paper, 3 hours 15 minutes. Theory 80 marks + sessional 20 marks = 100.

Section A — Reading skills (20 marks)
Two unseen passages, total length 600–700 words:
- Discursive passage of 400–450 words
- Case-based factual passage (with visual input such as statistical data or a chart) of 200–250 words
Questions assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, and vocabulary.
Section B — Writing skill and grammar (20 marks)
Grammar (8 marks): determiners (2), tenses (2), subject–verb concord (2), reported speech — commands/requests, statements, questions (2). Accuracy of spelling, punctuation, and grammar is tested through gap filling, editing, and transformation.
Writing (12 marks):
- Formal letter based on a given situation (100–120 words)
- Analytical paragraph on a given map, chart, graph, or cues (100–120 words)
- Report / essay / story / blog with given outlines (100–120 words)
Section C — Language through literature (40 marks)
Reference to context (6 marks): one prose extract from First Flight and one poetry extract from the prescribed poems.
Short and long answers (34 marks):
- First Flight — short answers 16 marks; long answer (internal choice) 6 marks
- Footprints Without Feet — short answers 6 marks; long answer on theme, plot, or character (internal choice) 6 marks
