Chapter 1 — Chemical Reactions and Equations (6 marks): writing and balancing chemical equations; combination, decomposition, exothermic, endothermic, displacement, double displacement, oxidation and reduction; corrosion and rancidity.

Chapter 2 — Acids, Bases and Salts (7 marks): chemical properties of acids and bases; acids and bases in water; strength and pH in everyday life; families of salts, pH of salts, chemicals from common salt, water of crystallisation.

Chapter 3 — Metals and Non-metals (5 marks): physical and chemical properties; reactivity series; ionic compounds; extraction and refining of metals; corrosion and its prevention.

Chapter 4 — Carbon and its Compounds (7 marks): covalent bonding; saturated and unsaturated compounds; chains, branches and rings; homologous series; nomenclature; combustion, oxidation, addition and substitution; ethanol, ethanoic acid, soaps and detergents.

Chapter 7 — How Organisms Reproduce (7 marks): variation; asexual modes (fission, fragmentation, regeneration, budding, vegetative propagation, spore formation); sexual reproduction in flowering plants and humans; reproductive health.

Chapter 8 — Heredity (4 marks): accumulation of variation; inherited traits; Mendel’s contribution; expression of traits; sex determination.

Chapter 9 — Light — Reflection and Refraction (8 marks): spherical mirrors and ray diagrams; mirror formula and magnification; refraction through a glass slab; refractive index; lenses, lens formula, magnification, power of a lens.

Chapter 10 — The Human Eye and the Colourful World (4 marks): accommodation; defects of vision; prism, dispersion, atmospheric refraction, scattering of light, Tyndall effect.

Chapter 11 — Electricity (7 marks): current, potential difference, Ohm’s law, factors affecting resistance, series and parallel combinations, heating effect, electric power.

Chapter 12 — Magnetic Effects of Electric Current (6 marks): magnetic field lines; field due to a straight conductor, circular loop, and solenoid; right-hand thumb rule; force on a current-carrying conductor; Fleming’s left-hand rule; domestic electric circuits.
