Exam scheme

English Compulsory, subject code 02. One paper, 3 hours 15 minutes. Theory 80 marks + sessional 20 marks = 100.

Section A — Reading (22 marks)

Two unseen passages, combined 700–750 words:

1. One passage (factual, descriptive, or literary) for comprehension, interpretation, analysis, and inference, including vocabulary (12 marks)
2. One unseen case-based factual passage with verbal or visual inputs such as statistical data or charts (10 marks)

Section B — Creative writing and grammar (18 marks)

• Notice, or formal/informal invitation and reply (4 marks: format 1, content 2, accuracy 1)
• Letter in 120–150 words: job application with bio-data/resume, or letter to the editor (4 marks)
• Article or report, descriptive and analytical, 120–150 words (6 marks)
• Grammar: conditional sentences, prepositions, phrasal verbs, conjunctions (4 marks)

Section C — Literature (40 marks)

Flamingo: one poetry extract and one prose extract (10 marks); short and long answers on incident, theme, or extract (19 marks).

Vistas: one prose extract (5 marks); short/long answer for global comprehension and extrapolation (6 marks).
