Topics covered

Unit 1 — Relations and Functions (10 marks): types of relations (reflexive, symmetric, transitive, equivalence); types of functions (one-one, onto), composition and invertible functions; inverse trigonometric functions (definition, range, domain, principal value branches, graphs, and properties).

Unit 2 — Algebra (15 marks): matrices (concept, notation, order, equality, types, zero and identity matrix, transpose, symmetric/skew-symmetric matrices, operations — addition, multiplication, scalar multiplication, non-commutativity of matrix multiplication, invertible matrices up to order 2); determinants (of a square matrix up to order 3, minors and cofactors, applications in finding the area of a triangle, adjoint and inverse of a matrix, solving systems of linear equations using the inverse of a matrix).

Unit 3 — Calculus (44 marks — the largest unit): continuity and differentiability (algebra of continuous functions, differentiation of composite, implicit, and inverse trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithmic differentiation, parametric functions, second-order derivatives); applications of derivatives (rate of change, increasing/decreasing functions, maxima and minima, simple real-life problems); integrals (integration as the inverse of differentiation, methods — substitution, partial fractions, by parts, listed standard integral forms, definite integrals, fundamental theorem of calculus, properties of definite integrals); applications of integrals (area under simple curves, especially lines, circles/parabolas/ellipses in standard form); differential equations (definition, order and degree, general and particular solutions, solving by separation of variables, homogeneous first-order first-degree equations, linear first-order differential equations).

Unit 4 — Vectors and Three-Dimensional Geometry (18 marks): vectors and scalars, magnitude and direction, direction cosines/ratios, types of vectors, position vector, vector addition, scalar multiplication, section formula, scalar (dot) and vector (cross) products and their applications, projection of a vector; three-dimensional geometry — direction cosines/ratios of a line joining two points, Cartesian and vector equations of a line, coplanar and skew lines, shortest distance between two lines, angle between two lines.

Unit 5 — Linear Programming (5 marks): introduction, related terminology (constraints, objective function, optimization), different types of linear programming problems, graphical method of solution for problems in two variables, feasible and infeasible regions, feasible and infeasible solutions, optimal feasible solution.

Unit 6 — Probability (8 marks): conditional probability, multiplication theorem on probability, independent events, total probability, Bayes’ theorem.
